I’m very curious as to how you decide on certain features of characters and their personality traits. If you don’t mind my asking, how do you piece together a character?
Also, on your Instagram videos there’s usually some kind of music playing in the background, I was wondering what sort of music you and K. listen to?
Honestly, I think every character has come together in different ways and from different starting points. Sometimes, we’ll start with a sketch and work personality into them, other times, a character will be written and we’ll work our way through the appearance after the fact. Inspiration comes from all kinds of places. Haha, maybe we’ll figure out a character building workshop one day, since I don’t have a simple answer at the moment.
I suppose we listen to all kinds of music! Okay, maybe not country, unless some Johnny Cash slips in. Otherwise, we generally gravitate to indie rock/alt, 60s/70s rock/folk, hip hop, old school jazz, jpop, classical, etc., etc. One playlist will contain Queens of the Stone Age, MGMT, Amanda Palmer, Kasabian, The Beatles, Missy Elliot, Super Junior, The Black Keys, Blonde Redhead, Jimi Hendrix, RJD2, Radiohead, Nicki Minaj, Die Antwoord, Nina Simone, Violent Femmes, Sublime, Father John Misty, and so on. K’s more into lyrics, I’m more into melody, so the bands who become our mutual faves need a lot of “oomph.”
I’d love a character building workshop from you guys. Building characters is one of my favorite parts of writing, as it’s fun and fairly easy for me. So while it’s not something I feel I really need to work on, I love seeing how other people do it (especially if I already know I like their characters) and the great thing about writing is that there’s always room to grow.
